Due to OpenAI’s move to prepaid billing, I (finally) had to pay for using the OpenAI API. But this also allows me to finally use the gpt-4-turbo-preview
model as I have reached tier 1. Now the AI-generated summaries on this blog will be created using this new model. 😄

Extended content warning
I realized recently that I wrote some cringe (to put it mildly) posts in my late adolescent phase. On the one hand, I would of course like to banish these posts from my blog, after all, my opinion has changed completely in some cases since then. But on the other hand, it would be a shame to let this part of my personal development simply disappear.
What should I do with my new domain?
I recently complained about domain registrars. But I also recently registered a new domain: j7s.me. A numeronym of my first name. And the .me TLD to show that I am a person. (And it is a short domain that was available.)
If you haven’t already noticed (though why would you?), I have finally merged my homepage into my blog. Why? Well, I believe it doesn’t make much sense to keep them separate. My homepage had only a few pages, and elements such as my “About Me” page and collections of things I use are well-maintained on my blog as well. Some pages were also deleted during this process, but I made an effort to preserve links where possible.
In my opinion, it’s more beneficial for me to consolidate most of my content on my blog, reserving a separate site for a professional portfolio. However, I’ve already set this up at jlelse.com.
In general, I hope this change will cause less confusion in the future and reduce the complexity of my online presence and self-hosting.
Yes, I still keep some old domains to redirect to sections of this blog: appydroid.eu to redirect to the app and smartphone related section and ein-geek.de to redirect to the German part of my blog. Even though I merged them about four years ago. 😄
By the way, the oldest post still live on this site is approaching its seventh birthday. Time flies! 😱
Why I renamed my blogs
After a bit of consideration and a poll on Fosstodon, which shows a clear result even before it ends, I decided to rename this blog from “jlelse’s Blog – Thoughts, stories and ideas” to “Jan-Lukas Else – Thoughts of an IT expert”. Likewise, my German blog from “einGeek – Mehr als nur Internet und Programmieren” to “Jan-Lukas Else – Gedanken eines IT-Experten”.
Two years jlelse.blog
Two years ago today, I registered jlelse.blog and merged my different blogs into one. Since then, I definitely blog more and now use the blog instead of posting on siloed platforms as well. It has definitely paid off. And the domain is already renewed for another two years.
Someone asked a good question in a comment.
How many times do you think you’ll change the back-end structure of your blog over 20 years? 😛
I hope 2020 was the last time I replaced the technical foundation for the blog. Now that I’m using my completely own system, there should also be little danger of me being lured somewhere else. Moreover, the whole effort… ☺️

One advantage when developing your own CMS software is that you can add new features very easily. Although you should not push this too far that unnecessarily many features collect and afterwards the quality suffers, but some things are still good to have.
My writing workflow (Dec 2020)
It’s probably time to tell you about my blogging workflow one year later (here’s how it was in 2019). And I saw other people writing about their writing workflow. What a meta topic…
